Michigander by B.J. Love
Greying Ghost Press #27

"Michigander is a treasure map buried in the backseat of a Lake Michigan Buick. Each line,
each word sluices across the page a clue to the next. No trickery for gamesmanship.
A phenomenal new voice from the throat of a straight-shooting riser. Quit hitting the
snooze and wake up to this already."

excerpt:
Filament drags itself out of bulb. Black screen. The elevator opens on a copyright
full of Roman numerals too heavy to carry any further. Lake Michigan waves re-
grettably. The sidewalk eats your shoes, I say knowingly, but don't worry; it's not
real, look, there's glue hanging from the nose. We are given themes: tears, tape &
sailboats. They are presented in color. The bulb looks to the lens for direction.
Narration tethers itself to meaning using an ill-advised knot and the screen stretches
out, hoping for a better view...

When you hear this tone, pull the rope & it will lift us up to our cavities. Dentists
are re-gentrifying the neighborhoods; sticker prices dangle anchors & anchors dangle
our camel hair jackets. The effects you see are practical, but miniature. They are kept
in small ceramic bowls covered by aluminum foil. They are hand painted. They are
actual. There is a surprise with every breaking thing, says the Chinese private eye.
There are men with spools standing by, waiting to wire our jaws shut, I say,
cautiously. Titles flicker by in a casual smile.

There are measurable hallways rolling through this conversation, tongue from teeth,
breath from memory. There are audible pops dwelling on the words. Cracking on the
lips. I've written only one song, says the ghostly songwriter, but I gave it away in
a whistle. Reactively, I say, the shells in your pockets are keepers of secrets. A boy &
a girl scream through the fog of narration. Neighbors teethe from doorways. Dogs moan
as dogs do when their owners teethe from doorways.
