They drive north along the highway, ocean to their right, a flat expanse to their left. The sun is higher now, he can feel himself squinting against its light. She is sitting slightly askew beside him, one leg tucked underneath. His right hand working the gears. She leans almost imperceptibly toward him, a movement he can feel more than see. He moves the stick into fifth, sits back a little against the cold of the vinyl seat. He takes a short breath, reaches out the fingers. His right hand touching her knee. Her head on his shoulder, her wet hair cold against his neck. He watches the white lines that border the road. One on each side, separate. He looks ahead, imagines seeing beyond the slow left curve of the highway. Imagines seeing the point at which they vanish to perspective. The point at which they meet.
